Govt Needs Rp180tn to Develop Public Transportation System

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government planned to develop a rail-based mass transportation system in the country's six big cities, namely Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, Semarang, and Makassar. The plan was listed in a technocratic draft of National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) for the period of 2020-2024.
“Financing needs to develop the public transit system is indicated to be some Rp180 trillion,” said the National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro in The Westin Hotel, Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 23.

According to Bambang, the use of public transportation in the archipelago was far below that of other Asia’s cities. Only 5 to 25 percent of Indonesians in metropolitan regions utilized mass transports, while in Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo, the rate reached 90 percent, 70 percent, and 50 percent respectively.
Based on the draft, the rail-based transit systems will include road and rail-based transit, implementation of Transit Oriented Development (TOD), development of support scheme from the central to regional administration related to city’s public transportation, and establishment of city transport agency or institution.
At present, Bambang went on to say, the support scheme was still being drafted.
